World Mosquito Day

A little mosquito once sat on my arm,
her evil intent was to cause me some harm.
To stick in her proboscis and suck up my blood,
leaving behind a sore itch I must rub.
I think its quite mean doing something like that….
So I raised my right hand and I swatted her flat.

 ~Hilda aka Lora~

While the original design was rather ugly and awkward, she was
developed further after Natwick’s departure under Berny Wolf,
Seymour Kneitel, Roland Crandall, and Willard Bowsky. Betty
became finalized as completely human by 1932 in the cartoon
Any Rags. Her floppy poodle ears became hoop earrings, and her
black poodle nose became a girl’s button-like nose.

Betty appeared in ten cartoons as a supporting character,
a flapper girl with more heart than brains. In individual cartoons
she was called "Nancy Lee" and "Nan McGrew", usually served
as a girlfriend to studio star Bimbo.  more tomorrow

Bell Pepper Belongs to the Nightshade Family

Bell pepper is one of the vegetables in the nightshade (Solanaceae) family,
which includes eggplant, tomatoes and white potatoes. Anecdotal case
histories link improvement in arthritis symptoms with removal of these
foods; ; however, no case-controlled scientific studies confirm these observations.

                                     New York City

The term ‘The Big Apple’ was coined by touring jazz musicians
of the 1930’s who used the slang expression ‘apple’ for any town
or city. Therefore, to play New York City is to play the big time- The Big Apple.
There are more Irish in New York City than in Dublin, Ireland; more Italians
in New York City than in Rome, Italy; and more Jews in New York City than
in Tel Aviv, Israel.

You are trying to be more cautious with your money,
therefore you are shopping more sales. Meat is on sale,
but the only problem is you don’t know how long it will
last in the freezer.

When I get it home I break down the packages of meat
into my family sized servings. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap,
then I wrap it securely in foil. With a permanent marker
I indicate the type of meat in the package and the month
and year that I bought it.  These times are generally accepted.

Uncooked – 1 Year
Cooked Meat Only – 4 months
Cooked/Prepared/Casserole-3 months

Beef:

      Nautical Phrase

                        High and dry

                          Meaning

Stranded, without help or hope of recovery.

Origin

This term originally referred to ships that were beached. The ‘dry’ implies
that, not only were they out of the water, but had been for some time and
could be expected to remain so. It was used in a ‘Ship News’ column in
The [London] Times, August 1796:

"The Russian frigate Archipelago, yesterday got aground below the Nore at
igh water, which; when the tide had ebbed, left her nearly high and dry."

Mom’s Macaroni Salad

When you have a week straight of over 100° temps, you start
looking for cooler things to make. My mother whipped up this
macaroni salad earlier this week and I think I ate half of the
whole bowl. Think macaroni and deviled egg make love child
and you’ll be in the vicinity. There is a hard boiled egg, some
roasted red bell pepper, chopped spring onions, a generous
amount of mayo, and seasoning with sweet paprika.
Perfect for a summer BBQ or picnic salad.

Mom’s Macaroni Salad Recipe

This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled.

Ingredients
2 cups (about 1/2 lb) dry macaroni pasta
(use rice pasta for gluten-free version)
Salt
1 hard boiled egg, chopped
1 roasted red bell pepper*, chopped
1 Tbsp fresh chopped parsley
1/4 cup chopped spring onion or green onion
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice or vinegar
A generous amount of mayonnaise (1/3 to 1/2 cup)
Several pinches of paprika
Freshly ground black pepper to taste

* Trader Joes carries a good product, jarred roasted red bell
peppers packed in oil and vinegar. We usually use these in
recipes calling for roasted bell peppers. Alternatively, you
can roast a fresh bell pepper by blackening it over an open
flame on a gas range or broiling until the skin blisters on all
sides. Remove from heat source, place in paper bag, after
a few minutes remove from bag and scrape off the blackened
bits. Discard seeds and stem.

Method
1)  Cook macaroni, as directed on its package, in at least 2 quarts of
salted water (1 teaspoon of salt per quart of water).
When cooked through, but still slightly firm (al dente) remove from heat,
drain and rinse with cool water until room temperature.

2)  While macaroni is cooking, put chopped onions into a small bowl
and sprinkle the lemon juice or vinegar over them.
This will serve to take the edge off the onions.

3)  Combine cooked macaroni, onions, and all other ingredients in a
large serving bowl. Adjust seasonings to taste.

Serves 4.
