  Betty Boop Tidbits
The last "Betty Boop" cartoons were released in 1939,
and a few made attempts to bring Betty into the Swing Era.
In her last appearance, "Rhythm on the Reservation" (1939),
she drives an open convertible labeled, "Betty Boop’s Swing Band",
while driving through a Native American reservation, where she
introduces the people to swing music and creates a
"Swinging Sioux Band."

The Betty Boop cartoon series officially ended with one more
1939 entry, Yip Yip Yippy, which was actually a Boop-less one shot cartoon.

                   NUMBERS
11 drivers to have raced in the first five events of the Sprint Cup
season but have yet to lead a lap. Notable on that list are Jamie
McMurray, Casey Mears, David Ragan and Brian Vickers.

758 laps led by Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 18 Cup starts at Martinsville,
the most by an active driver who is winless at the track
(and second to Allison). Earnhardt has nine finishes in the top 10,
all sixth or better. He has one second-place finish—last October—
among his eight top fives. The next race in the Sprint Cup Series
is Sunday at Martinsville  VA. (end of numbers)

Since rain cancelled the qualifying trials on Friday, Sprint Cup lineup
will be by driver points, placing Jeff Gordon in the pole position.

Short track racing is full of excitement and I’m ready to cheer my guy,
#14 Office Depot Chevy Driver Tony Stewart, to his first win in 2009.

Reportedly Amber Heard is the lucky actress to take every woman’s
dream job: Playing a romantic interest for Johnny Depp’s character
in a movie. The two will star together in Rum Diary, a film adaptation
of the Hunter S. Thompson novel of a love triangle in the tale of a
washed-up, hard-drinking journalist named Paul Kemp (Depp)
in 1950s Puerto Rico.
Heard will play Chenault, the free-spirited girlfriend of a fellow
journalist who cheats on him with Kemp, trying to convince
him to run away with her.

                 INTERPOL
Formed in 1924, the International
Criminal Police Organization has come
to be known best by its cable designation,
"Interpol." With its world headquarters in
St. Coud, a Paris suburb, Interpol is, to the
casual observer, an admirable effort:
cooperation among the police of various nations
to apprehend criminals, control drug traffic
across international borders, and similar activities.
To the surprise of many, however, Interpol is a
private organization to which law enforcement
agencies of over 100 nations belong and pay
annual dues. Its position and growth have
stemmed entirely from the support of these
police around the world, whence comes the
mistaken belief that Interpol is a legally
constituted international agency.

Coffee stunts your growth.
           False.
Coffee won’t affect growth,
but too much caffeine doesn’t
belong in a child’s diet.
Excess caffeine can prevent the
absorption of calcium and other nutrients.

PHRASE OF THE WEEK
      ‘skeleton in the closet’
               Meaning
A secret source of shame, potentially
ruinous if exposed, which a person or
family makes efforts to conceal.
               Origin
The phrase ‘a skeleton in the closet’ was
coined in England in the 19th century.
Since then the word closet has become
used primarily in England to mean
‘water closet’, i.e. lavatory – a possible
hiding place for a skeleton I suppose,
but not one with much potential.
The English now usually use
‘a skeleton in the cupboard’,
with ‘skeleton in the closet’
more common in the USA.
‘A skeleton in the closet’ undoubtedly
originated as an allusion to an apparently
righteous person or family having a guilty
secret waiting to be uncovered.
